(NB. The timing in these web demonstrations does not accurately reflect the timing used in the experiments we performed. In the real experiments, the duration of the mudplashes or flicker  was generally 80 ms,  much shorter than what will usually occur on a web demonstration. However this is not critical for the effect to occur, so long as the mudsplashes or flicker  appear all at once. If they are appearing progressively, then please try a faster computer or faster internet connection).

EXAMPLES OF CHANGES WITH MUDSPLASHES
(every few seconds a "mudsplash" will appear. Can you say what else is changing in the picture?)
 airplane
 traffic
(also cf this demo of the dangers of head-up displays in driving!)
 diner à deux

THE SAME CHANGES WITHOUT THE MUDSPLASHES ARE PERFECTLY OBVIOUS:
 airplane - no splash
 traffic - no splash
diner à deux - no splash

EXAMPLES USING FLICKER INSTEAD OF MUDSPLASHES
 Notre Dame
 Parking
 Verre de lait
For further web demonstrations using flicker see  Rensink, O'Regan & Clark, 1997

THE SAME EXAMPLES WITHOUT FLICKER ARE STRIKING:
 Notre Dame - no flicker
 Parking - no flicker
Verre de lait - no flicker

EXAMPLES OF CHANGES WITH MASKING RECTANGLE
(After about 5 seconds a masking rectangle will appear and disappear. On the first change you will probably not be able to say what changed behind the rectangle)
Mosque
Helicopter
Hockey
